    • Establish why children are more vulnerable to environmental toxins than adults.
    • Identify any other vulnerable populations at the local, national, and international levels.
    • From public and environmental health perspectives, what types of policies are needed to protect vulnerable populations from environmental hazards?

Hello professor and class,

Children are more vulnerable to environmental toxins than adults because their bodies are still developing and are at a higher risk of suffering the effects of environmental toxins. Compared to adults, children drink more water, breathe more air and eat more food per pound of body weight and therefore increase their chances of exposure (CDC, 2020). Toddlers are more likely to put dirt in their mouths. For example, a toddler playing in a highly contaminated lead dirt can get sick from lead poisoning if they ingest the dirt. A child’s body may not be able to completely breakdown the components of toxins that enter their body. Since children are still growing and health issues from environmental toxins take years to develop, children hence have more time to develop health conditions than adults who are exposed later in their lives.
